The term leadership, is commonly used, when addressing, or referring to the effectiveness, or success of a nation, team, or organization. Though, the term is subjective, and relative, and may sometimes be defined differently according to context, it is important to state that the word still possess a generic meaning. DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP. Leadership is the skill or ability to manage, influence, motivate, or provide guidance to an individual or group of people. The idea of leadership centers on motivating, and providing direction for a team, or individuals for efficiency or productivity. Leadership is not a guesstimate, and cannot be achieved by trial and error. It is a skill, and rather intentional. It requires capacity, and discipline. It is in order to say that, just like every other skill, leadership requires ardent learning, and practice to be honed. FUNDAMENTALS OF LEADERSHIP. The fundamentals of leadership are learning, and practice. Therefore, he who aspires to be a leader must first be taught, either by self, or by another individual. This step is followed up by putting into action (in real life) everything learned. In another word, the second step is simply taking up simple responsibilities to perfect what has been learned. Unfortunately, most people assume that the first step is not necessary. They, ignore investing knowledge into themselves through learning, and jump into the second stage. Absurdly, when they do, they forget starting by taking on small responsibilities. This is why most nations, and organizations does not work; because the helm is controlled by individuals bereft of the rudiments of leadership. WHY LEARNING AND PRACTICE IS IMPERATIVE IN LEADERSHIP. It prepares you for the tasks ahead. It provides you with better perspectives. It sharpens your visibility. It builds competence. It helps you to identify the right people for the job. Provides the resources to train and bring out the best in people. It builds confidence. It provides the adequate knowledge for the job. It builds capacity. Helps you identify opportunities. Provides the ability to set the right goals. Helps in goals implementation. Provides the insight to identify problems easily and proffer solutions. IMPLEMENTATION OF LEADERSHIP. Every leadership should have a system upon which it is built upon, and when this is done, implementation becomes easy. Talking about system, this encompasses culture, vision. goals, strategy, and execution. Culture should be the foundation of leadership system if it must work. Without it, there will be no direction. Culture is the norm; the way of life of every leadership system. It is the banner of every leadership system, that defines how the organization operates, or delivers their job. It is culture that forms the behaviour of an organization; it determines how members of an organization deliver their duties even in the absence of a supervisor, etc. Vision refers to the clear image of the future of an individual, nation or organization. It is that desired future that inspires, and motivates an individual or a people to wake up at night. It aligns with the core values, and priorities of an organization or a people. It provides focus, and guides against dissipation of energy and wastage. Without vision, it will be very hard to start and finish a project. In the absence of vision, an organization may be tempted to jump from one project to another without completion, wasting resources. In fact, vision encourages continuity, and helps in the elimination of wastage of resources. Goals and vision have similarities, the only difference is that goals are the building blocks to achieving a vision. Goals are specific targets set to achieve a vision. For example, the vision of a country may be to achieve steady power supply within seven years, but the goals would be ‘how to’ achieve this. The breakdown steps on how to achieve this vision is the goal. This could mean harnessing solar energy as well as the traditional means of power generation, and setting up national task force to monitor progress, and make sure that all parties adhere to the agreement. As long as this specific target enables the vision of achieving the seven years vision, it is simply a goal. Strategy is slightly interwoven with goal; the only difference is that a strategy is the approach one takes to achieve a goal, just like goal is the specific targets set to achieve a vision. From the example given to describe goal, strategy would mean the steps designed to implement the set targets. In this case, strategy would mean how many megawatts would be generated through traditional means yearly over the period of seven years, how many megawatts will be generated through solar energy, how many solar panels are required, how many solar centers would be built, would it be better for government to build the solar centers or build partnership with existing solar energy companies to handle the project, etc. Execution is the final stage in leadership implementation. It is the practical implementation of strategy. It requires a thorough understanding of strategic plans to carry out a successful execution. Execution must tactically follow through the crafted ideas and allocation of resources as stipulated in the strategy to accomplish the desired vision CHARACTERISTICS OF A LEADER. A leader should be knowledgeable. A leader should be selfless. A leader should be innovative. A leader should be open minded. A leader should be a good listener. A leader should be bold. A leader should be decisive. A leader should be a good communicator. A leader should be a motivator and influencer. TAKEAWAYS Leadership is more of an individual thing than it is a general thing. The term leadership is subjective and relative. Leadership is a skill. Leadership is neither guesstimate nor trial and error. Leadership is visible (it can be seen wherever it functions) Leadership is transferable Leadership is intentional. Leadership requires capacity and discipline Leadership creates productivity and success The fundamentals of leadership are learning and practice. Leadership motivates and provides direction. Leadership has a system. Leadership can be implemented by creating a culture, setting up a vision, goals, strategy and tactical execution. Arthur Ugochukwu-Okoro.
*CHANGING THE WORLD* Change is constant” is one quote that has become so familiar to us as our own skin. There is no denying that the world is constantly changing and whether we know it or not, we as individuals contribute to this change. The power of thoughts is undeniable to how we influence this change. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. So, when we have positive thoughts, we tilt towards those things of positivity. It motivates us to help either by a gift of something materialistic, service delivery, uplifting of emotions through smiles or by sharing a motivating and inspiring thoughts. On the other side of the coin also, Negativity grows from our negative thoughts. It comes into manifestation when we say hurtful words, steal, demotivate or make others feel inferior. it’s somehow difficult for us as humans to continuously be positive. However, I have come to the realization that whatever act we repeat over and over again becomes a habit. The world is full of negativity and if there is anything we can do; it is to shine a little light in it. Gradually we will tilt it towards positivity. Everyone will not be positive, but we must play our own part. I believe that fire will eventually set others ablaze. In this time of difficulty (COVID-19) we must be positive and be a source of light to others. As much as it is within our powers, we must be positive. It beneficial to our health also Edmond Yakubu
IF I AM THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA First thing I’d love to do is unbundle Nigeria…..FISCAL FEDERALISM or if you like, RESTRUCTURING. I fear that until the above is done, we may not move forward. I opine so because our present centralized system makes external control (neo-colonialism) too easy, slows down growth within the States as so many economic components of the polity are enveloped in the so called exclusive list. 2. Technical Education: after I unbundle Nigeria, my next attention will go to technical education. This is to aid the development of home grown technologies as this is the only way to grow our manufacturing sector, raise the Naira’s value, bridge our import/export gap and create jobs….imagine that all the mini buses, keke(tricycles) are made in Nigeria, imagine that the vehicles used by our security agencies are made in Nigeria, that the President’s car is a Nigerian Brand….yes it is possible if the best brains are in the technical schools (state of the art….with teachers sorted from amongst the best Nigerian brains and maybe the Chinese, Japanese and Indians at take off before eventual full take over by Nigerians….pay the Nigerians like university lecturers to encourage them) from SS1- SS3 with emphasis on manufacturing….at graduation, establish Polytechnic Universities and Let their innovations and creations be commercialized and domesticated for use. If the two are done, corruption would have been reduced as the Federal Government would’ve become smaller and the office of President would become less attractive and less powerful. If we grow our technology locally, we’d stop playing catch up, jobs would be created as manufacturing would be full swing By Jolly Edem (Akwa Ibom, Nigeria) ___________________________________________________ To me, if I am to advice the President, i will first of all advice him on diversification of the economy from Oil based economy to something more meaningful. Like Agriculture, IT, Automobile, Solid Minerals etc. If the economy is diversified, we will not be talking of how to borrow to find our budget when the price of crude drops. When that is achieved, i will advice him on resource control. Which is similar to ur own advice earlier. In this system, States will be encouraged to develop whatever resources the Found in the States, make profit out of it and send a certain percentage to the Federal. That will reduce the over burden on the central and each stop state waiting for end of the month to collect allocation from the Center and return to state. When resource control is achieved, then we shall talk of decentralizing the Police. Encourage stage police and community Policing. These few steps will empower the States and the resources from the various States will be utilised fully. By Excellency Arthur Ugochukwu( Abuja Nigeria) __________________________________________________ If I am the president of the federal Republic of Nigeria….. My government shall be built on a Domestic ownership programme that will be formulated to support growth by providing means for a building a stronger, more diversified ownership base system. And the objective shall be that Nigeria success will be build collaboratively around the strength and special features of its regions and citizens. Regional and urban development will be socially just, environmentally sustainable and economically responsible. Multi-sectoral economic systems and pro – business environment together with good accessibilities and services will enable all parts of Nigeria to engage in growth. Municipalities will have adequate resources to boost vitality and to organize services. Measures should be focused on diversity of policies in all tiers of government dynamics and thriven Nigerian action will be taken to strengthen the vitality of regions, municipalities and cities in all diverse aspects as part of sustainable growth strategy. Actions will be taken to ensure balances regional distribution of various components of vitality. Nigeria will be known as a front runner in technolical advances, innovative procurement and culture of experimentation, Nigeria will be recognized as a front runner that develops and introduces new solutions enabled by the digitalisation and technological advances doing a cross administrative and sectoral boundaries. Public procurement can help in making technological advances, and can also serve more broadly to drive sustainable development, innovative and life circled thinking. I will build a state of the hospitality and strengthen the security of this country by providing advanced technological equipment.i will make my government accessible through probity and accountability. Why this is important to the nation is because ‘RELIGION is used as a formidable vehicle against societal injustice and violence, against oppression and exploitation, against all that dehumanise God’s children(Christians,Islams,Buddhist etc). For me positivism of religion is a way forward in Nation building… My humble contribution😊 By Barr. Chioma Igwe (Abuja Nigeria) ___________________________________________________ My focus as President will be on 1. Human Capital Development. Our country people are crying that we keep bringing foreigners to do jobs and so they created local content. The role of the local content is to ensure those thar are qualified get the job first. Unfortunately, there are some skills that need direct government intervention in training. When I was in the Oil and Gas industry, there was a job that lacked man power, most OIC give it foreigners. The job of remote equipment operators. You need to train with the manufacturer to do so. There are numerous examples. If ITF, NSITF, NDE and PTDF is working properly, over 100,000 Nigerians can gain technical skills. 2. Education. While we can argue for technical or vocational, great countries have invested alot in Research and Development. Most graduate in Microbiology have not seen what a Covid-19 test kit look like while in school. 30% of my budget will go to R and D in Schools. 3. Technology. The world is shifting to complex IoT but we have little or no State owned or Country Owned Companies involved in building our backbone IoT. Rather, we took it from Ericsson and gave it to Huawei. This is also related to Human Capital. 4. Ease of doing business. In Isreal, there are over 15 millionaires almost every month. There are 5th in world when you compare millionaires to population. They have an idea lab and funding system. Our similar agency is BOT with 90% bottlenecks and bureaucracy, your ideas will die before you finish first step. 5. Agriculture. The UK and Australia are projecting a short fall in greens this year because acres of farms are lacking close to 200,000 part time farmers. The World Food Program is trying to step in. Nigeria have mutated our farming programs that it is now North base. However, urban and vertical farming can be done in all locations. I will bring back the School to Farm programs and create More farm roads in the country. 6. Youth Participation in Politics, I will strengthen the SUG, NANS, NYCN, LTGYF, NYP, YAN with Ministry of Youths as a breeding ground for Leadership Training. 7. Inclusive Governance, I will work with the National Assembly and Judiciary to repeal laws that provide regional segregation, ethnic disparity, gender inequality etc. There is alot that the President can do. These are the few. By Henry A. (Rivers State Nigeria)
